Kano Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi credits President Bola Tinubu’s reforms with Nigeria’s return to growth, rising reserves and inflation falling to 14.6%. He also cited GDP growth of 4.48% in the second quarter of 2026 at a conference reported by P.M. News.
The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, believes Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s administration deserves credit for moving Nigeria away from the economic “brink”. The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria was speaking on Tuesday at the Oxford Global Think Tank conference, according to P.M. News.
Sanusi cited gross domestic product growth of 4.48% in the second quarter of 2026, compared with 0.9% during Muhammadu Buhari’s presidency. He also said inflation had fallen from 30% to 14.6% and could reach 12.5% by the end of the year.
Dollar-denominated per capita income has risen by 47% since 2023, while Nigeria’s reserves have reached 55 billion dollars, he added. Sanusi nevertheless noted that a significant share of these reserves came from portfolio flows, which are exposed to market fluctuations and supported in particular by high oil prices.
According to the emir, economic diversification is also progressing: 20% of Nigerian exports now come from the Dangote refinery. He said the reforms had laid the foundations for economic stability, while stressing that they were only a first step.
