Donald Trump has announced the end of annual US military aid of $3.8 billion to Israel. RFI puts the end of the aid at the close of 2026, while Punch notes that the security agreement was due to run until 2028.
Trump said the aid, intended in particular for weapons purchases, could be ended following an agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He added that Washington would continue to help Israel if needed, according to Punch.
The agreement began in 2019, after being signed three years earlier under Barack Obama’s presidency. Punch notes that Israel has received more than $300 billion in US economic and military aid since 1948, in inflation-adjusted terms, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.
Netanyahu had already expressed his wish to reduce his country’s dependence on US support. Trump also linked his decision to attacks by Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate candidate in the US midterm elections, according to Punch.
