Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says a return to war would benefit no one and that he wants to resolve the crisis with Washington through dialogue. His remarks came after reported US strikes on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, according to AFP, which says media outlets cited anonymous US officials.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on Tuesday for the crisis with the United States to be resolved through dialogue, saying that a return to war would benefit no one. He was speaking hours after US strikes were reported on the Iranian island of Qeshm, according to Vanguard.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran was ready for battle, while Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi invoked Iran’s right to self-defence. Pezeshkian nevertheless said his government was still seeking a negotiated solution and that the supreme leader had recently expanded its powers to discuss subjects previously excluded from negotiations.
Iran’s IRNA news agency reported five successive explosions on Qeshm and two aircraft seen by residents. US officials cited by several media outlets described the strikes as defensive. US President Donald Trump had earlier said that a deal with Iran was possible.
