The United States reportedly struck Iran’s Qeshm Island on Monday, in a series of limited operations secretly carried out in recent weeks, according to France 24 and the Wall Street Journal cited by Defimedia. Donald Trump had expressed optimism about negotiations with Tehran on the eve of the US midterm elections.
US officials told the Wall Street Journal, cited by Defimedia, that the US military was seeking to keep the strikes secret so as not to give the impression that Washington was preparing to resume large-scale military operations. The attack came on the eve of the US midterm elections.
Iran’s official Irna news agency reported that five explosions had been heard on Qeshm and that residents had seen two aircraft in the sky. Contacted by AFP, the Pentagon referred questions to Centcom, the US military command for the Middle East, which had not immediately responded.
Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Iran wants a deal, as quickly as possible. It could happen!” Since the start of the war, triggered on 28 February by Israeli-US strikes against Iran, Tehran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz and regularly targets ships that cross it without its authorisation, Defimedia reports. A military lull has been observed since September, despite fresh US and Israeli threats in recent days.
