American voters go to the polls on Tuesday 3 November to renew all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and determine the majority in Congress, according to Agence France-Presse. Nearly 250 million voters are called to the polls for these midterm elections, held two years after the presidential election and during President Donald Trump's term in office.
Democrats hope to retake the House, where Republicans have held a five-seat majority since the 2024 elections. Nearly 58 million voters had already voted early, a record for midterm elections, AFP reports.
Democrats are also favourites to swing the Senate, according to Siena College polls conducted for the New York Times. In 2018, during Donald Trump's first term, Republicans lost 41 seats in the House in the midterm elections; in 2022, Democrats lost nine under President Joe Biden.
The vote follows the final campaign rallies held by Donald Trump and the Democrats on 2 November. It also comes after Trump promised to act as “Mr Veto” if Democrats won Congress, in a statement published on 1 November.
