Burkina Faso counts more than 86,000 reservists

Burkina Faso has recorded more than 86,000 registrations for its military reserve in less than a month, General Célestin Simporé announced in Ouagadougou. The government is targeting 100,000 reservists by the end of 2026, amid continued attacks by armed groups, 24 Heure Info reports.

Burkina Faso recorded more than 86,000 registrations for its military reserve in less than a month, War and Patriotic Defence Minister General Célestin Simporé announced on Sunday, 1 November. The authorities are aiming for at least 100,000 reservists by the end of 2026.

The minister gave the figures in Ouagadougou during celebrations marking the 66th anniversary of the National Armed Forces. The ceremony, chaired by Ousmane Bougouma, president of the Transitional Legislative Assembly, was held under the theme of the military reserve serving the country’s defence.

The mobilisation comes as Burkina Faso faces recurrent attacks by armed groups. The new figure of 86,000 registrations in less than a month contrasts with the tally of 86,000 reservists registered in nine months, published on 2 November.
