The Peoples Democratic Party candidate for governor of Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu, says being left off the electoral list will not stop him from seeking the post in 2027. He spoke in Abeokuta while welcoming more than 1,000 defectors from the All Progressives Congress, reports Punch.

Oladipupo Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for governor of Ogun State, Nigeria, is maintaining his bid for the 2027 election despite being left off the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) list. He described the omission as a temporary distraction when speaking on Monday, 2 November, Punch reports.

Adebutu spoke at the PDP headquarters in Abeokuta, where he welcomed more than 1,000 defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by former lawmaker Segun William. Mohammed Haruna, chairman of INEC’s Committee on Information and Voter Education, said the commission had received 66 petitions against the final lists of candidates and rejected 64. According to INEC, the omissions relate to alleged non-compliance with the requirement for parties to submit their membership registers.

The statement follows INEC’s rejection of Adebutu’s candidacy, announced on 30 October in INEC’s decision on Nigerian candidacies. On 30 October, former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo also said Adebutu’s absence would not disadvantage the PDP, according to an article published the same day on Obasanjo’s position.
