Nigerian Vice-President Kashim Shettima defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms at an APC rally in Calabar, saying they were beginning to produce results despite their harsh effects on the population. The party is seeking support in Cross River State ahead of the 2027 presidential election, Punch reports.
Nigerian Vice-President Kashim Shettima defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms at a rally for the ruling APC in Calabar, Cross River State, on Monday 2 November. Ahead of the 2027 general elections, he urged voters to compare the country’s current situation with that of 2023, when Tinubu came to power, the Nigerian daily Punch reported.
Shettima acknowledged that the reforms had caused hardship for the population, but argued that they were beginning to produce positive results. He compared Tinubu’s approach to that of Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s founding prime minister, whose government transformed the country into a global financial centre.
Cross River Governor Bassey Otu promised that the state would deliver the maximum number of votes for Tinubu in 2027. He linked this support to the benefits Cross River could, in his view, gain from federal projects and policies. Shettima also urged residents to support Tinubu, Governor Otu, his deputy Peter Odey and the APC’s other candidates.
The campaign in Calabar follows previous calls for Tinubu to secure a second term: on 1 November, governors from south-east Nigeria called for his re-election.
