Six people were abducted on Friday on the Adoka road in Benue State while transporting to Okpoga the body of a woman who had died in Kano, Nigerian newspaper Punch reports. Otukpo local government chairman Maxwell Ogiri confirmed the abduction on Monday and said the kidnappers were demanding 15 million naira.
The kidnappers abandoned the body on the road. Federal Road Safety Corps officers took it to Adoka police station on Saturday, before police transferred it to the mortuary, according to Punch. Benue State police said officers were trying to find the victims; vigilante groups and young people are also taking part in the search, according to Maxwell Ogiri.
The Adoka road and routes through Otukpo and Ohimini are regularly affected by kidnappings, Punch reports. On 16 October, gunmen abducted Catholic priest John Otache and seven other people as they returned from a village market, according to the newspaper.
