Suspected thugs disrupted the All Progressives Congress senatorial primary in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, sending voters fleeing and seriously injuring one person. The local government chairman also escaped an attempted lynching, reports Daily Post Nigeria.

Men suspected of being political thugs disrupted the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary on Monday in Kaura Namoda, in Nigeria’s Zamfara State, according to Daily Post. The attacks targeted two polling centres and sent voters and residents fleeing.

The attackers targeted Namoda Model Primary School and the polling station in Galadima Dangaladima ward, located in front of the emir’s palace. Voters left the sites while waiting for officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who had still not arrived by 11.30am.

A confrontation between men also suspected of being thugs left one person seriously injured. The chairman of the Kaura Namoda local government, Mannir Muhammad Haidara, escaped an attempted lynching at Namoda Model School; the attackers reportedly damaged his vehicle.

The election notably pits incumbent Senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura, backed by the camp of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, against Senator Tijjani Yahaya Kaura, supported by the camp of Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, director-general of the APC presidential campaign council. Both candidates come from Galadima Dangaladima ward.
