The operation also targets fraudulent data changes and extortion of applicants, the commission said in a statement reported by Daily Post Nigeria.

Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested people suspected of carrying out illegal National Identification Number (NIN) enrolments in Gwagwalada, in the Federal Capital Territory, and other locations. It has also seized the equipment used, according to a statement issued on Monday by its communications head, Kayode Adegoke, reported by Daily Post.

The NIMC said the operation was carried out by its Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit. It targets unauthorised enrolments, illegal data modifications and the extortion of applicants, the agency said. Its Director-General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated a zero-tolerance policy towards extortion and unprofessional practices.

The commission is urging the public to enrol at approved centres and make data modifications through its official self-service platform. It also recommends the NINAuth app, which allows users to protect their number and print a slip, among other functions. Complaints can be made to its toll-free line on 0800 0616 462.
