The Bissau-Guinean League for Human Rights welcomed the release of soldiers detained over their alleged participation in a coup attempt and called for five other prisoners to be freed. It also sought clarification on three soldiers and publication of a court decision, according to O Democrata.

The Guinean League for Human Rights (LGDH) has called for the release of five people detained in Guinea-Bissau as part of an investigation into an alleged coup attempt. Tcherno Bari, known as Tcherninho, Braima Baldé, Malam Djassi, Ibraima Conté and Abulai Queita have reportedly been deprived of their freedom for more than a year without judicial proceedings, according to an LGDH statement published on Facebook and seen by O Democrata.

The organisation also asked the Supreme Military Court to clarify the situation of Victor Tchongo, Ramalhano Mendes and Lamine Camará and to make public the ruling that allegedly ordered their release on appeal. It is demanding its immediate implementation if the decision is confirmed, according to O Democrata.

The LGDH also called for the identification and prosecution of those responsible for the alleged summary executions of Vigário Luís Balanta and Mamadu Tano Bari. It welcomed the release of soldiers detained for more than a year and considers ending arbitrary detentions a condition for social calm and respect for Guinea-Bissau’s international obligations.

The demand comes after calls for justice by Bissau-Guinean civil society over two alleged deaths on 31 October, and amid the power crisis denounced by Firkidja di Pubis on 29 October.
