Guinea-Bissau Prime Minister Ilídio Vieira Té called for the investigation into the violent death of activist Vigário Luís Balanta, found dead on 31 March near Nhacra, to be accelerated. He called for the truth to be established and promised to support under-resourced judicial institutions, according to O Democrata.

The Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau Ilídio Vieira Té called on Friday 30 October for the investigation into the death of activist Vigário Luís Balanta to move forward so that the circumstances of his death can be established and justice served, reports the newspaper O Democrata. He spoke after a visit to the public prosecutor-general, Mário Yalá, and the president of the Court of Audit.

Balanta, aged 35, was found dead on 31 March 2026 at Ndam Lero, in the Oio region, about 30 kilometres from Bissau. His body bore stab and gunshot wounds. The head of government said he was concerned by the slow pace of the proceedings and wanted to know their state of progress.

Ilídio Vieira Té also acknowledged that the judicial institutions lacked staff and material resources. He promised the transitional government’s support for the new teams at the public prosecutor’s office and the Court of Audit, within the executive’s capabilities.
