Guinea-Bissau political movement Firkidja di Pubis denounces a “palace coup” within the authorities and calls for international sanctions against those allegedly responsible. It also calls for a return to democratic order, the release of political prisoners and an agreed electoral timetable, according to a statement quoted by O Democrata.
The Guinea-Bissau political movement Firkidja di Pubis denounced an internal crisis within the authorities on Thursday 29 October 2026 and called on the international community to sanction those responsible for blocking the political process. It is also calling for a return to democratic order and the release of political prisoners, according to a statement quoted by the O Democrata newspaper.
The movement describes as a “palace coup” the struggle it says it is witnessing within the regime that emerged from the November 2025 coup. It cites the disarming of militias loyal to former president Umaro Sissoco Embaló, the ban preventing him from returning to the country, changes at the Ministry of the Interior, the Court of Auditors and the public prosecutor’s office, as well as reshuffles in the military hierarchy.
Firkidja di Pubis believes that the two military high commands associated respectively with Umaro Sissoco Embaló and Horta Inta-a are having the same effects on the population, despite taking different forms. The movement attributes the crisis to disagreements over the electoral timetable, control of power and the search for external support.
It is calling for the results of the November 2025 elections to be respected and for the military high command’s rule to end. These demands come as Senegalese mediation seeks an inclusive political solution and political actors call for the release of political prisoners.
