Dredging at the port of Bissau is expected to enable Guinea-Bissau to receive larger-capacity vessels and improve port activity. The work also includes removing sunken vessels, while a new dredger continues the project begun at the start of the year, according to the Guinea-Bissau Ports Administration.

The ongoing dredging of the port of Bissau should enable Guinea-Bissau to receive larger-capacity vessels, Félix Blutna Nandungue, director-general of the Guinea-Bissau Ports Administration (APGB), said on Wednesday 28 October. He was speaking after a visit to the port redevelopment site by the transitional president, General Horta Inta-a.

The new dredger arrived on 24 October to continue work that began at the start of the year, Félix Nandungue said. The project includes dredging the access channels and removing wrecks from within the port. According to the director-general, the regular arrival of larger vessels would benefit the national economy.

The transitional president praised the government’s efforts to modernise port infrastructure. The visit follows Horta Inta-a’s consultations on the 6 December elections on 8 October.
