Algeria’s Béjaïa port unloaded 15,153.60 tonnes of maize in 24 hours, setting a new record for bulk cargo handling. The operation, carried out at quay 21 from the BUNUN TREASURE, involved four teams, according to the Béjaïa port company.

The port of Béjaïa, Algeria, unloaded 15,153.60 tonnes of maize in 24 hours, setting a record for handling bulk goods, according to a statement from the port company reported by Maghrebemergent. The operation was carried out at quay 21 from the BUNUN TREASURE, which had sailed from Santarém.

The teams transferred the maize directly from the ship to lorries, using the ‘under the crane – ship to lorry’ method, which avoids intermediate stages. Four teams took turns during the 24-hour operation, the port company said.

The port of Béjaïa has recorded record overall traffic levels since the end of 2024, according to Maghrebemergent. The increase concerns imports, exports and passenger traffic.
