ECOWAS engages political actors in Guinea-Bissau

A mediation mission from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by Senegalese minister Cheikh Niang, is holding discussions with Guinea-Bissau’s National Transitional Council. It aims to bring political and social actors closer together to foster consensus and domestic peace, according to Cheikh Niang, cited by ANG.

A mission from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) met the leadership of Guinea-Bissau’s National Transitional Council on Monday to engage with political and social actors, its head, Senegalese minister Cheikh Niang, said.

The mission wants to help find consensus and promote peace without imposing a solution, Cheikh Niang told the press. Senegal, appointed as mediator by ECOWAS, listened to the National Transitional Council’s position and said it was reassured by the discussions.

The delegation had earlier visited former president Umaro Sissoco Embaló to present its mandate. Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, neighbouring countries, want to reach a consensual solution that benefits the people of Guinea-Bissau and the sub-region, the minister added.

The visit follows Senegalese negotiations on a new election date, reported on 25 October, and the defence of a pact to restore democratic order by Guinea-Bissau’s prime minister on 26 October.
