The Economic Community of West African States is calling on Guinea-Bissau’s transitional authorities to consult widely with national stakeholders on the electoral timetable. ECOWAS is also backing Senegal’s mediation, as the presidential and legislative elections scheduled for 6 December 2026 could be postponed, according to a statement from the regional organisation.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Friday called on Guinea-Bissau’s transitional authorities to hold broad, transparent and inclusive consultations on the electoral timetable, as part of the Senegalese mediation, O Democrata reports.

The regional organisation says it is closely monitoring the political situation in Guinea-Bissau, as the authorities have announced difficulties in holding the presidential and legislative elections within the scheduled timeframe. ECOWAS believes dialogue must preserve the conditions for a peaceful return to constitutional order, according to O Democrata.
