A Senegalese delegation led by Foreign Minister Cheikh Niang presented a new mediation plan in Bissau on Thursday to Guinea-Bissau’s transitional authorities. Senegal, appointed mediator by an ECOWAS summit, now wants to agree with them on the details of its intervention, the minister told the press.

A Senegalese delegation led by Cheikh Niang, Senegal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, travelled to Bissau on Thursday to present a new electoral mediation plan to Guinea-Bissau’s transitional authorities. The plan stems from a summit of heads of state of ECOWAS, the West African regional organisation, which appointed Senegal as mediator in the crisis, Cheikh Niang said.

The mediation is to begin in the coming weeks and take place in several phases until the end of the electoral process, according to the Senegalese minister. He was accompanied by Senegalese Defence Minister Yankoba Diémé. Cheikh Niang is to present the plan to Guinea-Bissau’s authorities.
