Bissau city council has launched a cleaning competition involving 24 neighbourhoods, providing them with equipment for the work. The campaign will last two months and reward the neighbourhood scoring up to 140 points under criteria covering cleanliness, waste sorting and sanitation, the ANG agency reports.
Bissau city council launched a cleanliness competition on Friday between 24 neighbourhoods to reduce waste accumulation and improve the condition of Guinea-Bissau’s capital. The campaign, named the Inter-neighbourhood Championship, will last 60 days under the slogan “60 days for a new city, with the council and the population united”, according to the Angolan News Agency.
Each participating neighbourhood received two wheelbarrows, forks, brooms, gloves and hoes. The ranking will be based in particular on street cleanliness, waste sorting, tree and drain maintenance, awareness campaigns, house painting, market cleanliness and the rehabilitation of public toilets. The neighbourhood that meets all the criteria can score 140 points and will be declared the winner, the agency reports.
Minister of Territorial Administration and Local Government Carlos Nelson Sano called on residents to sort waste at home and deposit it at sites designated by the council. He said a clean city helped reduce disease and crime, while calling on young people to help change Bissau’s image.
