Congolese health minister Samuel Roger Kamba says the government recovered only $220 million of the $700 million paid to partners responsible for the Ebola response. Association for Access to Justice president Georges Kapiamba is calling for an independent investigation into the funds’ destination, most of which had already been reported missing on 15 October.
Georges Kapiamba, president of the Congolese Association for Access to Justice, called for an investigation by the General Inspectorate of Finance into the management of $700 million intended to combat Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He called for the destination of the funds to be verified, following a statement by Jean Kaseya, director general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Taarifa.
Jean Kaseya said in Kinshasa on 14 October that $700 million of the $926.66 million already disbursed by donors remained unaccounted for. Congolese public health minister Samuel Roger Kamba said the government had recovered only $220 million, as the funding had been paid directly to international partners, Taarifa reports.
Georges Kapiamba believes that donors, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the Congolese government should ask the partners responsible for implementation to account for their use of the funds. He wants the audit to be conducted by the General Inspectorate of Finance to prevent it from being compromised by the government.
