Ghana’s National Identification Authority had six agents arrested for allegedly demanding money from parents during the free registration of children. Seven other team members were dismissed for knowing about the incidents without reporting them, according to a statement issued by the authority on 29 October.
The National Identification Authority (NIA), the Ghanaian authority responsible for issuing identity cards, announced the arrest of six agents suspected of demanding money from parents during the free registration of children aged 6 to 14 in Galaka, in the Upper East Region. The suspects were identified by parents and arrested by police in the Bawku West District, according to an NIA statement dated 29 October 2026.
The NIA also dismissed seven other members of the registration team after an internal investigation found that they had been aware of the alleged incidents but had not reported them. The authority reiterated that agents are not authorised to request payments from applicants or their parents and urged the public to report any suspicious behaviour through its official channels, according to the same statement.
