Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama announces talks with Rosatom to build Ghana’s first nuclear power station. The project is intended to diversify the energy mix and provide reliable electricity for industrialisation, as part of renewed cooperation with Russia, according to MyJoyOnline.
Ghana has begun discussions with Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear energy company, to build its first nuclear power station. Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama announced this in Moscow during the Russia-Africa summit, according to MyJoyOnline.
Accra wants to use the cooperation to secure reliable and affordable electricity, support industrialisation and diversify its energy mix with renewables and nuclear power. Mahama recalled that nuclear cooperation between Ghana and Russia dated back to 1964, when the Soviet Union supplied a two-megawatt reactor for scientific research.
The Ghanaian president also proposed expanding exchanges with Russia in agriculture, agro-processing, health, energy, security and digital services. He cited fertiliser production, agricultural equipment, medicines, transport infrastructure and the digital economy among potential areas of cooperation.
Mahama also called for easier access for African products to Russian markets and for the study of trade settlements in local currencies or through digital payments. He also proposed a Russia-Africa programme focused on digital innovation and artificial intelligence. The announcement follows the renewal of energy cooperation between Ghana and Russia, announced on 28 October.
