The United States has confirmed limited strikes against Iranian forces near the Strait of Hormuz, after explosions were reported on 2 November on Qeshm Island and near Bandar Lengeh. Washington describes the operation as defensive, while US media link it to Iranian fire targeting a US aircraft and tensions persist in the region.
The United States has confirmed that it carried out limited military strikes against Iranian positions on Qeshm Island, near the Strait of Hormuz, after Iranian fire targeted US assets, according to a US official cited by the Zambian Observer. The operation reportedly targeted Iranian forces using surface-to-air missiles against US aircraft.
The strikes took place on 2 November, after several explosions were reported on the island and near Bandar Lengeh, an Iranian port city. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had earlier said it had intercepted US reconnaissance drones near Qeshm and the Strait. Washington presents the operation as a limited defensive action, not the start of a large-scale military campaign.
The confirmation follows the alleged US strikes on Qeshm, reported on 3 November. It also comes as Iran negotiates with Washington over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, amid military tensions and diplomatic talks.
