Nigeria’s pension funds have more than 31.8 trillion naira in assets, but inflation and currency depreciation are reducing their real value. At a forum organised by Parthian Pensions, professionals called for coverage to be extended to informal workers and for retirees’ incomes to be improved, according to Business Day Nigeria.

Retirement assets managed by Nigeria’s pension industry could exceed 31.80 trillion naira, or about 31,800 billion naira. Sector leaders nevertheless said that the growth in assets should be accompanied by better protection of retirees’ real incomes, at Parthian Pensions’ 2026 forum, Business Day Nigeria reports.

Olufemi Odukoya, managing director of Parthian Pensions, called for coverage to be extended to millions of workers in the informal economy and for the level of retirement income paid to be improved. He also stressed the role of pensions as a social protection mechanism.

Olawunmi Abiodun, executive director responsible for operations and governance at Parthian Financial Services, warned that inflation and currency depreciation could reduce the purchasing power of retirement savings, even when account balances increased in nominal terms. The forum focused on the theme of digital innovation in pensions.

The discussions extend recent calls for better protection for Nigerian private-sector employees. Pension reform for private-sector employees was discussed on 30 October.
