At least 31 people have died and 48 remain missing after a humanitarian shelter in Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, was destroyed by a Russian bombardment. Regional governor Mykhailo Semikin and President Volodymyr Zelensky described the consequences of the strike during an aid distribution.
At least 31 people have died and 48 others remain missing after a Russian bombardment destroyed a building used as a shelter and aid distribution centre in Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region. Regional governor Mykhailo Semikin said Russia had dropped at least nine bombs on the site, according to Egypt Independent.
The building housed a reinforced basement built with European Union funding and designed to withstand most strikes. The force of the explosions caused the structure to collapse and a fire to break out. Local authorities used it as an administrative centre and humanitarian hub after many civilians left as the fighting approached the village.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strike took place on Monday during the distribution of humanitarian aid. He also said it preceded a new Russian attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, carried out with hundreds of drones and dozens of cruise and ballistic missiles.
The attack is part of a series of deadly strikes reported in recent days, after Russian bombardments killed 18 people on 2 November and a strike on an aid site killed 29 people on 3 November.
