Ukrainian forces evacuated 167 civilians from Kherson region, including 22 children and 21 people with reduced mobility, before a six-day local ceasefire expired. Ukraine’s military announced the operation, while Governor Oleksandr Prokoudine warned against areas near the Dnipro.
Ukraine’s military announced the evacuation of 167 civilians to safer locations in Kherson region before the expiry of a six-day local ceasefire in Olechky and its surrounding areas. They included 22 children and 21 people with reduced mobility who required special assistance, according to the Ukrainian military, cited by Daily Maverick.
The governor of Kherson region, Oleksandr Prokoudine, urged residents to avoid areas near the Dnipro, where the intensity of Russian strikes remains high. The ceasefire, which came into effect on Tuesday, was due to end at midnight Moscow time. Ukrainian and Russian authorities said it had enabled roads to be cleared of mines and civilians to be evacuated.
The six-day pause is the longest local ceasefire since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Pope Leo XIV said he hoped that cooperation between Moscow and Kyiv in Olechky would pave the way for broader peace efforts. US first lady Melania Trump, who took part in mediation efforts, said the ceasefire had enabled residents to access food, drinking water and medicines.
The evacuation follows a joint operation in Olechky, announced on 30 October, and the arrival of evacuated residents in northern Ukraine, reported on 31 October. The ceasefire was due to end on 1 November, according to the announcement of the end of the evacuation ceasefire.
