Qatar has sent a new proposal to Washington and Tehran to try to end their war, while the United States has struck Iranian missile equipment on Qeshm island. Both sides must respond within 36 hours, according to Qatari spokesman Majed al-Ansari and officials cited by Reuters.
Qatar sent a new compromise proposal to Iran and the United States on Tuesday 3 November, which they are considering while their positions remain far apart, according to Reuters. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari confirmed that both sides were examining the proposals and that exchanges were continuing.
Qatari mediators travelled to Tehran on Monday evening before returning to Doha. An official familiar with the discussions expects a response from Washington and Tehran within 36 hours. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that his country would not give in to US demands it considers excessive, and that resuming discussions on the nuclear programme would depend in particular on conditions linked to reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
The mediation follows US strikes, confirmed by Washington, against surface-to-air missile equipment on the Iranian island of Qeshm, near the Strait of Hormuz. The United States described the operation as defensive and limited. US confirms strikes against Iran near Hormuz.
Iranian Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf warned that Iran would retaliate in the event of another attack. US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was not considering further strikes after the midterm elections and believed an agreement remained possible. The war, triggered by US and Israeli strikes in February, has disrupted energy supplies and regional maritime routes. On Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also announced the continuation of discussions with Saudi Arabia on regional security.
The new proposal comes amid exchanges over the Strait of Hormuz. On 2 November, Iran proposed reopening it within two days, then began negotiations with Washington on the issue (Iranian reopening proposal and strait negotiations).
