Democrats take both chambers in setback for Trump

Democrats regain control of both chambers of the US Congress after the midterm elections, complicating the passage of Donald Trump’s legislative agenda. However, expert Yasmine Hasnaoui says the setback does not call US diplomatic policy on the Sahara into question, according to Yabiladi.

The Democrats’ regaining control of both chambers of Congress could place greater constraints on Donald Trump in the second half of his term, while leaving the US president with his foreign policy powers. A US politics expert interviewed by Yabiladi said the midterm election results reflected voters’ dissatisfaction with purchasing power, inflation, the cost of living and the Trump administration’s foreign policy choices.

According to this expert, quoted by Yabiladi, the election opens a period of “divided government” in Washington. Donald Trump’s ability to pass his legislative agenda will be reduced, without the results necessarily calling the Republican project as a whole into question.

The US recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, announced in December 2020 under Trump’s first administration, was not revoked by Joe Biden. The expert considers this achievement an element of continuity between changes in party control and calls for relations between Rabat and Washington to be examined separately from the balance of power in Congress regarding the bill targeting the Polisario.
