US Vice-President J. D. Vance attributes the Republicans’ defeat in the 3 November midterm elections to the war with Iran, the cost of living and relations with Israel. He believes some of Donald Trump’s 2024 voters switched sides, reports P.M. News.

US Vice-President J. D. Vance attributed the Republicans’ defeat in the midterm elections to the war with Iran and Washington’s relationship with Israel on 4 November. In a statement published on the social network X, he said he believed that many voters who had supported Donald Trump and him in 2024 had voted for the Democrats in the 3 November election.

J. D. Vance cited four causes of the electoral rejection, according to internal polls: the war, the rising cost of living, doubts about adherence to the “America First” line and dissatisfaction with the relationship between the United States and Israel. “The reason we lost is the war,” he wrote, dismissing the idea that the defeat was mainly explained by Republican voters staying away.

The vice-president explained that party analysts had found strong turnout among voters who had supported the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024, but also their intention to vote for the Democrats. He cited Florida, where the electorate remained, in his view, nine points more Republican than Democratic—a margin close to that of 2024—as an indication that the problem was not only mobilisation.

The defeat referred to by J. D. Vance followed the Democrats’ capture of both chambers of Congress in the US midterm elections on 3 November. On 4 November, Donald Trump also attributed the Republican defeat to the war with Iran, while analyses cited inflation and the cost of living.
