Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud dismissed Baashe Yusuf Ahmed as president of the Supreme Court and appointed lawyer Ibrahim Iidle Suleyman in his place, Caasimada Online reports and Puntland Post confirms. A statement from the Somali presidency said the decision followed complaints from judges, judicial staff and legal professionals, according to Puntland Post.
The measure is part of a wide-ranging reform project for Somalia’s judicial institutions. Caasimada Online presents the reform as intended to improve the functioning of the justice system, while the presidency says it should guarantee citizens a transparent and reliable justice system, according to Puntland Post.
Puntland Post recalls that Baashe Yusuf Ahmed had refused to recognise the election held in July in Galmudug, which led to a new vote. His successor had already headed the Supreme Court between 2016 and 2018, the outlet adds.
