Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye has set the presidential election for 3 May 2027, with a second round scheduled for 1 June if no candidate wins an absolute majority. Applications will be submitted from 13 to 22 November 2026, while the opposition is already challenging the organisation of the election, reports Umuseke.

Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye has set the presidential election for 3 May 2027 in a decree signed on Wednesday 4 November. A second round is scheduled for 1 June if no candidate receives more than 50% of the votes, reports Umuseke.

Candidates will have to submit their applications to the Independent National Electoral Commission from 13 to 22 November 2026. Independent candidates must have left a political party at least one year earlier, while former party leaders must observe a two-year period.

Évariste Ndayishimiye, who has been in power since 2020, is expected to stand under the banner of the ruling CNDD-FDD party. Abel Gashatsi of UPRONA, Valentin Kavakure of FPN Imboneza, Gabriel Banzawitonde of APDR, Francis Rohero of FPI and Gaspard Kobako of AND Intadohoka have already announced their candidacies.

The electoral timetable was set after the announced withdrawal of Sahwanya-FRODEBU, which refused to put forward a candidate while challenging the organisation of the election. The party defended this position in its withdrawal from Burundi’s 2027 presidential election, announced on 20 October.
