In Gitanga, Burundi, pig farmer Josué-Aristide Ndemeshabahizi estimates his herd at about 400 animals after restarting his operation with a single pig that survived an epidemic, Iwacu reports.
With a business partner, he started with three pigs and increased the herd to about 50 before the disease almost wiped out the farm. The surviving pig subsequently gave birth to 18 piglets. The farmer sells part of his production to buyers from Bujumbura and says a batch of 30 pigs can earn him up to 50 million Burundian francs.
His activities also include a cowshed with seven Friesian and Sahiwal cattle. Ndemeshabahizi employs 13 permanent workers and encourages them to develop their own farms.
