Somaliland president accuses Mogadishu of preparing new massacre

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi has accused Somalia’s federal government of preparing a new massacre by deploying the 26th military division to Laascaanood. Mogadishu recently appointed General Abdirahman Awad Balcade to head the unit, reports Puntland Post.

The president of Somaliland, Cabdiraxmaan Maxamed Cirro, has accused Somalia’s federal government of preparing a new massacre and seeking to provoke clashes in the northern regions. He made the accusations over the Somali army’s 26th Division, based in Laascaanood, according to Puntland Post.

Somalia recently appointed Lieutenant General Cabdiraxmaan Cawad Baalcade to head the division, making him the first commander appointed to the unit since the collapse of Somalia’s former central government. The new military official has been conducting activities in territories administered by the North-East and visited localities in Buuhoodle district the previous day.

Cabdiraxmaan Maxamed Cirro said Somaliland, a breakaway administration that claims independence from Somalia, could oppose what he called Mogadishu’s plan. He also called on Somalis to prioritise stability and peace.
