Somaliland’s armed forces have launched the Heegan 2026 military exercise in Benderwanaag, Somalia, with tanks, artillery, drones and live fire. Planned over several weeks, the training aims to improve unit coordination and operational readiness, according to an army statement reported by Horn Diplomat.

The Somaliland army launched the “Heegan 2026” military exercise in Benderwanaag on 28 October 2026, featuring live-fire exercises, tanks, artillery and drones. The training aims to strengthen combat readiness and coordination between units, according to an army statement cited by Horn Diplomat.

The exercise, inaugurated by army commander Brigadier General Nimcaan Yuusuf Gaaxnuug, will bring together several units over the coming weeks for joint training with armoured vehicles and other military equipment. The forces will assess their ability to conduct combined operations, according to the military command.

The army plans to hold the exercise every year to improve soldiers’ skills and adapt their training to changing warfare tactics and techniques. It asked residents of Benderwanaag and nearby herders to stay away from firing ranges and training areas because of live fire, artillery noise and troop movements.

The command announced awareness-raising activities, the installation of warning signs and measures to protect civilians, livestock and property during the manoeuvres, according to Horn Diplomat.
