Drilling of the Curad-1 oil well off Somalia has been delayed after a technical failure halted work for three weeks and amid rough sea conditions. Cabdulqaadir Aadan Maxamed, president of Somalia’s National Petroleum Agency, explained these difficulties to public media.
Operations have resumed after the equipment was repaired. The well is located in waters about 3,500 metres deep, where sea conditions complicated the schedule, Cabdulqaadir Aadan said.
The teams have drilled 5,500 metres and still have 2,000 metres to go, according to the official. The initial objective was to reach the planned target in the first 15 days of October, but the schedule has been pushed back.
The Somali federal government is relying on oil exploration and production to support growth, create jobs and increase public revenue.
