Addis Ababa is redeveloping its riverbanks, public spaces and main routes as part of an urban transformation intended to improve the living environment and amenities in the Ethiopian capital. This vision, based on collective participation and pooling resources, was presented by the Ethiopian News Agency on 28 October 2026.

Addis Ababa is redeveloping its riverbanks and public spaces to provide residents with places for walking and recreation, with landscaped areas and cleaned waterways, according to Ethiopian agency Fanamc. Projects include the riverbanks between Kechene, Gihon and Bambis, as well as Selam Road.

The capital’s mayor, Adanech Abiebie, highlighted the lighting in these spaces, which allows families and friends to meet there after sunset. The developments also aim to bring urban life closer to nature and encourage recreational activities and social interaction.

The renovation of the riverbanks and modernisation of urban routes could also create opportunities for commerce, services, tourism and private investment, Fanamc says.
