Identity card applications rise by 11% in Las Anod

The Somali National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) office in Las Anod has issued around 11% more national identity cards since opening a year ago. The increase is notably linked to the requirement to present identification to take a domestic flight, reports Puntlandpost.

Applications for national identity cards have risen by around 11% at the National Identification and Registration Authority of Somalia (NIRA) office in Las Anod, one year after it opened. The increase is notably linked to the requirement to present the card when taking a domestic flight, reports Puntland Post.

The Las Anod office receives applicants from areas administered by Puntland and districts under Somaliland. NIRA headquarters in Mogadishu has authorised its agents to issue cards to applicants from these territories who meet the criteria. The application is free; the process includes fingerprinting, a digital facial photograph and a digitised signature.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said the card would become necessary to access many public and private services. The requirement to present it for domestic flights came into force on 2 October, one day after the reported attempted hijacking of a Flydubai aircraft. The measure had already been reported in the announcement of the national identity card requirement for domestic flights.
