Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud says Mogadishu has cancelled its defence and security agreement with the United Arab Emirates and will reject any base intended for proxy wars. He also accuses Israel of seeking a naval base in Somaliland, in an interview with Sky News.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said his government had ended the defence and security agreement with the United Arab Emirates in an interview with Sky News, Caasimada Online reports. He said Somalia would not authorise the establishment on its territory of bases intended for proxy conflicts.
The president described activities carried out by the UAE in Somalia without the federal government’s agreement as illegal. He also accused Israel of seeking a military presence in Somaliland, including a naval base near the Red Sea, and maintained Mogadishu’s opposition to the territory’s secession.
The announcement follows the suspension of agreements between Somalia and the UAE, decided on 5 October. On 6 October, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud also accused Abu Dhabi of encouraging Somaliland’s secession.
