Kenyan opposition leaders have reaffirmed their intention to field a single candidate against President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential election. Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), said on Friday at a rally in Kiambu County that he had agreed with Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa on the principle of a joint candidacy.
Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper Patriotic Party, and Eugene Wamalwa, head of the Democratic Action Party-Kenya, also called on voters to mobilise to defeat William Ruto at the ballot box. The three leaders accuse the president of mismanaging the country and denounce parties that they say are seeking to divide voters in the Mount Kenya region.
Rigathi Gachagua specifically targeted Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and other regional leaders, whom he accused of acting on behalf of the head of state. The DCP leader also promised free and fair primaries within his party, which he describes as the main political force in Mount Kenya. The opposition plans to choose its joint candidate before the 2027 election, according to statements reported by Citizen Digital.
