Macharia Njeru, former chair of Kenya’s Independent Policing Oversight Authority, announces his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election under the Mwongozo Mpya Party. In Ol-Kalou, he says his party will also field candidates in parliamentary and local elections, according to Citizen Digital.

The former chair of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), Macharia Njeru, has announced his candidacy for Kenya’s 2027 presidential election under the Mwongozo Mpya Party (MMP), which he leads, according to Citizen. He made the announcement in Ol-Kalou, Nyandarua County, during an awareness forum organised at grassroots level.

The constitutional lawyer said his party would field candidates for the positions of MPs, senators, governors, women representatives and county assembly members across the country. He also said the MMP would cooperate with opposition leaders who shared its ideas, while ruling out alliances based solely on the pursuit of power, according to Citizen.

Macharia Njeru accused President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration of failing to address difficulties in education, healthcare, agriculture, security, access to water and youth employment. He also denounced corruption and disregard for the law, according to Citizen.

The announcement comes as discussions over a joint opposition candidacy intensify. The choice of an opposition candidate is expected at Christmas, after negotiations on unity between Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka and Kalonzo Musyoka’s call to unite Kenya’s opposition.
