Two people have been detected alive beneath the rubble of an 18-storey building that collapsed in Eastleigh, in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. Rescue teams located them on the evening of Tuesday 27 October, using equipment operated by Chinese experts, the outlet Kenyans reports.
Rescuers had not yet reached the two survivors by Wednesday morning. About 85% of the rubble had been cleared and at least 16 people were still missing. Teams are using acoustic detectors, thermal cameras and radar to detect sounds, vibrations or movement beneath the debris.
Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations is questioning several people to establish the cause of the collapse. They include Nairobi County officials and one of the building’s three owners, who has given a statement to investigators.
The discovery comes after six survivors were rescued on 27 October. The building collapsed in Nairobi on 23 October while people were inside.
