The presidency described the appointment as a step towards strengthening diplomatic, economic, security and technological cooperation between the two sides, according to Caasimada Online.

The president of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, known as Cirro, received the credentials of Michael Lotem, Israel’s ambassador to Somaliland, in Hargeysa during a ceremony at the presidency, reports Caasimada Online. The diplomat was welcomed by the leader of the self-proclaimed territory in northern Somalia.

Michael Lotem said he wanted to strengthen cooperation between Israel and Somaliland in security and defence, trade, investment, technology, health and education. President Cirro, for his part, referred to infrastructure, trade, investment and Somaliland’s position on the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden passages.

Israel appointed Michael Lotem in April, after becoming the first UN member state to recognise Somaliland, according to Caasimada Online. The ambassador will initially carry out his duties without residing permanently in Hargeysa.
