Civilians injured or whose property was damaged in the explosions at an ammunition depot in Renk could seek compensation if negligence is established. Lawyer Santio Daniel says civil claims may be possible after the investigation into the explosions, which caused injuries, according to Eye Radio.

Civilians injured or whose property was damaged in explosions at a South Sudanese forces ammunition depot in Renk could seek compensation if an investigation establishes negligence or a failure to comply with safety rules, lawyer and legal researcher Santio Daniel told Eye Radio.

Compensation could cover physical injuries, medical costs, hospitalisation, medicines, rehabilitation, possible disability, loss of income, and damage to homes, businesses and other property. The investigation will have to examine, among other things, ammunition storage, safety distances and fire prevention measures, according to Santio Daniel.

The incident began with a fire at one depot before spreading to other facilities belonging to the South Sudanese forces’ First Division. Renk Civil Hospital had received several civilians injured by shrapnel on Thursday, as well as members of the organised forces, according to county authorities cited by Eye Radio. High temperatures were initially suspected to have played a role, but the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
