Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf travelled to N'Djamena and then Niamey on 3 and 4 November as President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's special envoy. The visits to Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno and Bakary Yaou Sangaré aim to bring Chad and Niger closer together, according to La Nouvelle Tribune.
Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf travelled to Niamey on Wednesday 4 November 2026, the day after a visit to N'Djamena, to pursue an initiative aimed at bringing Niger and Chad closer together. Sent by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, he was received in Niger by his counterpart Bakary Yaou Sangaré, after meeting Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, according to La Nouvelle Tribune.
The two-stage visit comes as Algeria has strengthened its military cooperation with Niger. The Algerian Parliament authorised the deployment of soldiers to the country and an initial contingent arrived at the end of October, according to La Nouvelle Tribune. Ahmed Attaf's diplomatic initiative thus combines the Algerian military deployment with an attempt to ease tensions between Niamey and N'Djamena.
The visit to Niamey follows the message from Tebboune delivered to Déby on security in the Sahel on 3 November. It also comes after the deployment of the Algerian army to Niger, announced on 1 November.
