Daily Maverick says Republican defeat weakens Trump

The Republicans' loss of both chambers of the US Congress weakens Donald Trump's political position after the 3 November midterm elections. Daily Maverick attributes the setback to voters' anger over the economy, the war with Iran, immigration and corruption allegations against the administration.
The Democrats won majorities in both chambers of the US Congress in the 3 November midterm elections, ending Republican control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to Daily Maverick. The count was not yet fully complete, however, and some results still had to be confirmed in the following weeks.
This new configuration will give the Democrats control of committees, the ability to schedule consideration of legislation, hold hearings and issue subpoenas. It will also allow them to influence public spending through Congress's budgetary power, as well as consider investigations with a view to possible impeachment proceedings against members of Donald Trump's administration.
The South African daily newspaper notably cites Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. among the officials who could be targeted by these investigations. The result came after Donald Trump accepted the Republican defeat and attributed it to the war in Iran.
