Democrat Adam Hamilton has won Kansas’s seat in the US Senate, giving his party its first Senate victory in the state in 94 years. He was leading his opponent by about five points on Wednesday morning, as counting continued, according to Reuters as cited by TimesLIVE.
The Democratic wave also pushed down the Republican vote in 99% of the roughly 2,100 US counties where most ballots had been counted. In these counties, the Republican share fell by nine points compared with Donald Trump’s score in 2024, according to results compiled by Reuters and USA Today.
The shift also affected constituencies with large Hispanic populations. In the 64 counties of this type where Senate seats were at stake, the Republican share fell by 14 points compared with the 2024 presidential election. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico was leading Ken Paxton, the candidate backed by Donald Trump, by about 12 points, according to TimesLIVE.
The Kansas result is part of the Democrats’ takeover of both chambers of Congress, announced on 4 November. It adds to the victories of Josh Turek in a Republican Senate seat and Abdul El-Sayed, the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
