Democrats Gina Hinojosa in Texas and Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia won the gubernatorial elections, according to projections reported by Bénin Web TV. Both have promised to slow or suspend data centre expansion, whose electricity and water needs are raising concerns; the Texas result still needs certification.
Democrat Gina Hinojosa won the Texas gubernatorial election against Republican Greg Abbott, with 5,150,962 votes to 4,436,382, according to provisional results from the Texas secretary of state. The Associated Press announced her victory, which still has to be certified, while 98% of polling stations had been counted.
Gina Hinojosa campaigned to slow new data centre projects, which have been accused of putting pressure on the electricity grid and water resources. In Georgia, former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms also won the governorship according to projections and proposed a pause in the development of these facilities, according to Bénin Web TV.
These positions do not yet amount to moratoriums. They come as the Atlanta region ranks among the most active US markets for this infrastructure and as Greg Abbott himself ordered in September the suspension of new permits issued by the state of Texas, pending an audit of their effects on natural resources.
The two victories extend the run of Democratic successes in the US elections of 3 November 2026, notably the emergence of historic figures and the capture of the two chambers of the US Congress.
