An Associated Press election survey attributes the Republican defeat in the US midterm elections to inflation, the cost of living and concerns about corruption. In Texas, voters facing financial difficulties largely supported Democrat James Talarico, the Economic Times reports.
Rising prices and financial difficulties contributed to the Republican Party’s defeat in the US midterm elections, according to an Associated Press poll of voters in all 50 states, reported by the Economic Times. Voters specifically cited the cost of food, healthcare, fuel and other essential expenses.
In Texas, about two in 10 voters said inflation was causing serious financial hardship for their families. Nearly three-quarters of this group voted for James Talarico, the Democratic Senate candidate. Among voters reporting moderate financial difficulties, six in 10 also supported the candidate.
Nationwide, about two-thirds of respondents believe Donald Trump’s economic policies have made the situation worse. Nearly eight in 10 of them supported Democratic candidates for the House of Representatives. Tariffs and the failure of the presidential promise to lower prices were among the grievances cited.
Government corruption was considered decisive by more than half of the voters surveyed. The poll also identified concerns about Donald Trump’s personal financial interests, including his cryptocurrency activities, his family’s business dealings and donations solicited from major companies to fund a new ballroom at the White House. These findings detail the economic difficulties already reported in the analysis of the cost of living before the midterm elections, published on 31 October.
