Miguel Maduro, former chairman of FIFA’s Governance Committee, is challenging the legality of Gianni Infantino’s fourth bid for the presidency of world football’s governing body. He is calling on the leader’s opponents to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), according to comments reported by The Athletic and Seneweb.
The Portuguese jurist cites Article 33, paragraph 2, of FIFA’s statutes, which limits the number of presidential terms to three. Gianni Infantino was elected in 2016 to complete Sepp Blatter’s term, then re-elected in 2019 and 2023.
FIFA believes that the period beginning in 2016 should not count towards the statutory limit. Miguel Maduro rejects this interpretation and says that only the competent oversight body could decide the matter. A possible referral to CAS could open a dispute over the FIFA president’s eligibility.
